If you need six connections today plus an uplink, an eight-port switch leaves one spare. A five-port model would already be too small. For a larger office, consider whether several small switches would create an untidy design compared with one centrally mounted 16- or 24-port unit.<\/p>\n<p>Also check whether SFP or combination ports are included in the advertised count. It may be appropriate for offices separating staff, guest, voice, camera and server traffic, but it needs competent configuration. It can reduce separate power adapters at the endpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Do not buy from the word \u201cPoE\u201d alone. Confirm:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the PoE standard required by each powered device;<\/li>\n<li>power needed per device;<\/li>\n<li>which switch ports actually provide PoE;<\/li>\n<li>the switch&#39;s total PoE budget;<\/li>\n<li>the maximum power available on one port;<\/li>\n<li>whether the budget changes with the power supply; and<\/li>\n<li>cable type, conductor material and installation suitability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cisco&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/en\/us\/support\/smb\/product-support\/small-business\/CBS110\/CBS110-Resource-Center-Selecting-Unmanaged-Switch.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unmanaged-switch selection guide<\/a> shows why model-level checks matter: within one product family, only specified models and a subset of ports may supply PoE. A switch can have eight network ports but only four powered ports.<\/p>\n<p>Add the maximum demand of all powered devices and leave capacity according to the manufacturer&#39;s design guidance. A camera marked \u201c12V DC\u201d is not automatically PoE-compatible.
